Integration of Etsy and Internet wars

This week, thousands of people who sell goods on Etsy are on strike to protest the company’s climbing fees. And what seems like a war on a small corner of the Internet is truly one of the most enduring wars in our digital world.

Etsy is one of the billion Internet businesses that brings people together for sale and for those who are interested in offering them. For their role, they combine a fee of between two and two, which can be 15 to 30% of each sale. (Etsy charge very low.)

Technology is calling these markets, and they are everywhere. Most of Amazon’s e-commerce sales fees come from the company that charges free merchants whose cat toys and phone chargers we find and buy on Amazon. Apple’s App Store, Airbnb, Restaurant Delivery Apps and Uber are also markets that meet with customers who offer apps, renting a house, restaurant lunch or airport rides.

It’s a constant in the digital world that these mediocre people hate the people and businesses they trust. Almost always, at least some app developers, restaurants, Etsy dog portrait makers, sub-stack newsletter writers, and other marketers find that fees are high, the rules are not fair, they are being abused – or above all. It is possible that these conflicts are inevitable. In 2022, running your own business almost always means leveraging the tech intermediaries that make your business possible, but it can also be daunting.

Look, I’d like to admit that in this Etsy dispute – as angry at Apple developers’ company and unhappy with Amazon’s sale of large digital assets to merchants – there is a point on both sides.

It’s incredible that Etsy, Amazon, and Apple do a lot of work for the people who sell them. Without Etsy, people who make dog portraits will have to try to set up their own websites or stores and find customers themselves, and face tasks such as credit card processing and customer service delivery.

Etsy does it all for them, in exchange for a fee that goes up by 6.5 cents per dollar of sales for 5 cents. Traders who are struggling with Etsy have other differences with their company, including how it effectively punishes business owners if they can’t respond to potential customers immediately, and the company Sellers need to pay to advertise on their product sites. Google, Pinterest and Facebook that are increasing their revenue.

Etsy says some of the company’s methods may be unpopular at this time, but they may benefit the seller in the long run.

Sometimes these gifts may seem overwhelming or abstract to us, but put yourself in the shoes of those Etsy sellers, restaurants that sell food through the Grubhub app, or businesses making apps for iPhones.

They love being able to find a group of customers in one place, but maybe annoyed that Etsy, Grubhub and Apple order so much of their money that they make the most of their money, And their work gets more powerful.

These differences reproduce the costs we pay, and they are high stakes for millions of people who are trying to make a living by liking them.

One question that is often asked about disputes over markets is what is the appropriate fee for those who are charging people to offer an Uber ride or sell a dog picture. But I also wonder if the conceptual technology industry isn’t quite imaginative about hunting for alternative ways to make money.

Almost all markets charge a commission and most fees when we buy something. Even in Metaverse, apparently, companies will still be able to make money from collecting a commission from people who sell virtual reality diodes. Is there another way, and will it be better?

A few years ago, an investment analyst with Goldman Sachs suggested that instead of struggling with developers who might be reluctant to pay up to 30% on digital weapon sales in an iPhone game, Apple could cut back on its costs. To support the app economy. Different method. Analyst, Rad Hall, suggested that developers pay instead for some or all of the Apple technologies that developers use to create and distribute iPhone apps.

This approach will certainly create a whole new set of issues. And that doesn’t solve the complaints of iPhone developers or protesting Etsy sellers who like a central place to sell their stuff, but hate the way these markets have so much power in how they operate their businesses. There is no magic balm for the Internet’s eternal battle over mediums like Apple and Etsy. But I applaud Hall’s efforts to re-imagine how markets make money. It seems we can use more experience to try to bring about peace in one of the internet’s most enduring conflicts.
